DA's associate company, Central Book Services (CBS: Australia’s book wholesaler) and On Demand (Australia’s biggest digital printer) have launched Central On Demand, integrating world class POD technologies into the supply chain for books in Australia. Central On Demand is a response to the changing world and how collaboration between two industry leaders can deliver the best solutions.

Executive Chairman of CBS, Richard Siegersma, comments: "The publishing industry has the largest product catalogue of any consumer category and we are building a supply chain around that. Since 2007, when we launched our unique consolidation services to handle book trade orders for all publishers, the Australian industry has benefited from a local wholesale infrastructure, the accepted norm in the UK and the US."

For a few years, CBS has collaborated with On Demand, Australia’s biggest digital printer, to leverage their POD digital capacity into the local wholesale supply chain. Several of the world’s largest publishers are already using the Central On Demand service to print books to order, one at a time, completely eliminating shipping costs, reducing administration costs, delivering faster and importantly, reducing carbon output. "We were discovering that surcharges of 20% on top of the air freight itself have made the current supply chain model unsustainable", adds Richard Siegersma.

This initiative complements perfectly our Espresso Book Machines rollout. In 2008 we brought the first Espresso Book Machine to Australia and plan to grow the local EBM network significantly.

The economic environment demands the industry untangle itself from the traditional way of doing things. Central On Demand allows UK and US publishers to improve margins and improve customer satisfaction avoiding slow and costly processes involved in exporting to Australia. Typically it takes 3 weeks to deliver an overseas title to an Australian customer. Central on Demand can deliver within 3 days.
